Liberia: Visiting U.S. City Planners Want To Steer Monrovia Development Master Plan

---- — A two man fact finding American Urban Planning and Engineering Team from the "Capitol Development Design International "company based in Washington, DC, has expressed optimism that a well crafted master plan for the renewal and development of the port city of Monrovia with its beautiful water ways and yet un-developed land skip can transform the city into a first class international Urban Attraction for tourists and businesses from the United States and around the World

Speaking during the week after touring the city, and when the team made a presentation on their work experience and expertise to stake the holders assembled at the ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy, the head of the visiting team, Mr. Stephen Coleman, says because of the confidence inspired around the world foe a new Liberian by president Ellen Johnson Sirleal, they did not hesitate to visit Monrovia at the invitation of Monrovia city council chairman, Daniel G. Johnson to come and be of helping providing impetus towards crafting the Monrovia City Development Master plan.

The delegation praised members of the government- Ministerial Zoning Committee including ministers of Public Works, Luseni Donzo, Lands and Mines Minister, Dr. Eugene Shannon, Planning Minister Amara Konneh, Internal Affairs Minister Ambulai Johnson and Transport Minister Jackson E. Doe, for the very warn reception and cooperation accorded them during their visits and discussions.

The visiting American Urban Planning Team, which also included marketing expert, Mr. Charles Johnson, says they were very much encouraged by the fact that each minister on the government inter-ministerial Zoning Committee demonstrated their desire for the project by immediately appointing a representative to serve on the technical team with which they will work to develop the terms of reference and roadmap the development of the Monrovia city development master plan that will be inclusive of all stake holders.

Speaking earlier at the presentation, the Chairman of the Monrovia City Council, Daniel G. Johnson pointed out that owing to the outdated nature of the City Zoning Laws produced since the 1950s, and the absence of a master plan to deal with the new realities of overwhelming floating and homeless population as well as the rapid expansion of slum communities precipitated on the city by the Liberian crisis.
