Abuja — The Democratic Peoples Party, (DPP), has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to release to the party its constitutionally guaranteed financial grant, which it has failed to give since 2006.

The Chairman of the party, J. T. Useni, at the party's National Working Committee meeting yesterday, said the party leadership has being under pressure from members concerning the whereabouts of the funds.

He said, "Since the inception of our party, a total of N24 million was received as grant from INEC. N4 million was received in 2006 and N20 million being balance of the 2006 grant in 2007.

Useni also turned to other party members not to leave the financing of the party solely in the hands of former governor of Sokoto, Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa.

He demanded that they come to the aid of the party as financing and sustaining it was a collective responsibility of both leaders and members.

He said, "in fulfillment of the provisions of the constitution and the electoral act, we engaged the services of a chartered accountant who carried out an audit exercise for us.

The report has since been published in two national dailies."

Useni said the party was still committed to fighting the injustices meted out to them by the election tribunals.

He said, "the Sokoto governorship election that was before the Federal High Court was decided against our party over the qualification or otherwise of the PDP governorship candidate.

The court ruled that it lacked jurisdiction over the matter. We have since appealed against the judgment."
