Liberia: Public Works Employees Vow to Speak Out

17 November 2008

Employees of the Ministry of Public Works say they would continue to speak out for their rights at the ministry without any fear of reprisal despite claims by the administration of the ministry that they are a purported group of individuals that are holding unauthorized gathering; issuing inflammatory and unfounded statements of false accusations against the administration.

In a statement issued over the weekend in reaction to a full page supplement that was released to their recent sit-in action by the administration of the ministry, the employees said they would remain undaunted and unwavering in exposing the ills pervading at the ministry, even with bullets at their throats.

They said they would continue to call for positive change at the ministry so that the people of Liberia will reap the developmental benefits of the government, stressing that anyone hindering such progress should be prepared to meet the wrath of a determined and conscious people.

"For too long, the Liberian people yearned without fulfillment. Now is the time for public officials such as Minister Donzo to give account of their stewardship.

Minister Donzo must understand that by virtue of his job, he is not above the Ministry of Public Works.

He must work circumspectly in upholding accountability and professionalism at all times," the statement said. See full text of the statement inside.
