Eritrea: Securing Equal Opportunities for All - a Solid Foundation for Achieving Social Justice

15 November 2008

editorial

Asmara — The history of the current Eritrean generation can be explained as a "history of laying strong foundation for a huge stride in economic development". To this end we are at present resolutely striving to multiply the limited resources we have through determination and hard work so as to lay the groundwork for a gradual political, economic and cultural transformation.

As a result of the strenuous efforts we exerted in the past few years to redress the effects of prolonged war and recurrent droughts, deforestation have been reduced and our water and soil conservation capacity have increased. We are also striving to step up agricultural production by transforming the rain-based traditional farming methods to modern technological farming. Parallel to this, continuous efforts are underway to set up complementary agro-industries in different parts of the country. Moreover, owing to the on-going development endeavors, roads and residential houses have been constructed in different parts of the country, water and power supply have been made easily available and communication and transportation services have been introduced even to the most remote parts of the country. These developmental achievements have in turn created a conducive atmosphere for agricultural and economic activities. Consequently, the interest of foreign and domestic investors in agriculture, mining and the tourism industry has progressed to practical implementation. Furthermore, we have made considerable progress in securing equal access to education and health services for all citizens within the context of Millennium Goals.

The Eritrean economic progress stands out as unique compared to that of other developing nations in that the benefits trickle down equally to every section of the society. Because many developing nations make claims of certain percentage of economic development while only a certain group of the society monopolizes the national resources and amasses unlimited wealth while the majority of the people continue to be impoverished. The people and Government of Eritrea have no desire to go through such kind of economic imbalance, for the Eritrean people had not made unimaginable sacrifices to build an economy that favors a privileged minority at the expense of the majority. The vision of the Eritrean people and government is to work together to create a reality where every citizen has the opportunity to improve his/her living standard and secure a better future for the coming generations. And this vision can only be achieved by guaranteeing equal opportunities for everyone because it is the basic foundation for securing social justice.
