Angola: Constitutional Court Analyses Political Parties Conflicts

17 November 2008

Luanda — Angola's Constitutional Court is attaching a special attention to conflicts within political parties, with a view to their settlement and normalisation of their functioning.

This was said to Angop by the Constitutional Court chief judge, Rui Ferreira, during an interview intended for an analysis of the performance of the court that has been operational for the last six months.

With the conclusion of the first task, that is the preparation of the institution for its functions within the framework of the electoral process, the magistrate said, the court is busy completing the files of constitutional and internal conflict nature troubling some political parties.

Rui Ferreira said the court is currently analysing the files on FNLA, PADEPA, PRS and PAJOCA which, he stressed, are in their final stage.

He explained that in the run-up for the legislative election of September 5 this year, the Constitutional Court decided to take some and drop other lists of candidatures presented by parties that claimed the leadership of their respective parties.

He said the decision was dictated by the specific case of the election, rather than by the judging of the matters related to the conflicts.

The official assured that the court will take its responsibilities and pertinent rulings.

The Constitutional Court started its functions in June this year, tasked with securing the constitutionality of the laws, decrees and ratified international treaties and verifying the observation of the Constitution.

It is also tasked with ruling on electoral matters, political parties and parliamentary litigation, presidential and parliamentary candidacies, regularity of electoral acts, formation and dismantling of political parties and conflicts within them and matters related to ceasing of parliamentary mandates.
