A new Ghana Telecommunication Company Ltd. (GT) under Vodacom management is set to take the telecommunication market in the country to a new level.

Its newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. David Venn has said that by tapping into the Vodafone world, Ghanaian customers are well positioned to enjoy the several innovations, products and services offered by Vodafone.

He said that in spite of the current products and services being offered by the telecom market, Ghana still has a long way to go, as there are a lot of services customers are not yet enjoying.

"Vodafone is here to change the telecomm market in Ghana. We will build and transform GT into a world class company. We are sure that with Vodafone, we will be on top because by far it is the biggest telecommunication provider in the world."

Mr. Venn gave the assurance during an encounter with the media in Accra. He disclosed that 800 staff have been trained in skills development programmes locally, while 45 have attended training programmes overseas since the inception of the GT / Vodafone deal in the past two and half months.

"I believe strongly in coaching people and training them to understand the environment within which they are working. We intend to do a lot more to brace the market and this is the start of greater things to come."

Government took a decision to off-load 70 per cent of its shares to UK-based Vodafone Plc despite criticisms.

However, some GT workers welcomed the decision with the hope that GT will also experience the immense growth that has taken place in the industry, where other players had taken on international partnerships, that go to create a cheaper, efficient and stronger bargaining power when it goes to dealing with manufacturers and vendors.

Mr. Venn was hopeful that the GT - Vodafone deal will afford GT the tools it needs to be competitive and trusted company.

"The end result will be a company that provides fixed line, broadband and mobile services under one roof." He said that currently much work is on going to achieve vast improvement in network quality.

"Vodafone is here to change, invest and build a company that every Ghanaian will be proud of."

The new GT CEO Mr. David Venn takes over from Mr. Dickson Oduro-Nyaning whose contract ended on November 10, 2008. Mr. Oduro-Nyaning retired from GT in May 2007 after 35 years service with GT.

Mr. Venn's career in the telecommunications industry spans over 30 years during which he transformed businesses into fast growing and dynamic organisations that have returned significant shareholder value.
