African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) peacekeepers have began deploying at an army base formerly housed by Ethiopian troops, Radio Garowe reported Monday.
Gen. Nyaya Javanol, commander of AMISOM forces from Burundi, told local media that the military move is part of the Djibouti Agreement.
"This is part of our committment to take over positions vacated by Ethiopian troops," Gen. Javanol said, while describing the arrival of AMISOM forces at the ex-Jalle Siyad College facility in southern Mogadishu.
He called on "all Somali groups" to support the Djibouti Agreement, which calls for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Ethiopian forces from Somalia.
Residents near the ex-Jalle Siyad facility said AMISOM and Somali government soldiers had began searching vehicles along the road leading to the building.
Some Ethiopian soldiers remaining in the building were described as finalizing their move out of the facility, according to Somali military officials.
Unconfirmed reports told Garowe Online that Islamist insurgents attacked the newly-deployed AMISOM peacekeepers later Monday.
