South Africa: Ajax Defenders Focus On Scoring

Ajax Cape Town captain Brett Evans has explained to KickOff.com why the team's defenders have struck a rich vein of goalscoring form.

The Bafana Bafana defender scored a stunning goal in Ajax's League victory over Free State Stars at the weekend.

"It's a result of hard work at training. As defenders we also focus on set-pieces, which is why I executed one against Stars this weekend.

"Our strategy is also to exploit space against our opponents on match day, and fortunately things are working out well.

"Eduardo Ferreira has the height and uses his aerial dominance very well," Evans adds.

Ferreira, who has formed a formidable partnership with Evans, is among the club's top scorers with three League goals to his name, plus one in cup competitions.

Evans, who neatly drove in a free-kick from outside the box against Ea Lla Koto, says it was not his best goal.

"It was a good goal, but definitely not my best. My favourite so far is the one I scored way back in 2000 when we beat Orlando Pirates to win the Rothmans Cup," he says. [Ajax beat Pirates 4-1.]

Evans has been with the Cape Town side since its formation as a merger between Cape Town Spurs and Seven Star.

He adds that it is high time that the club maintains consistency. Ajax's form has up and down, contrary to last season where they challenged for the League title, only losing out to Supersport United on the last day of the season.

"As seen by the weekend victory, we are gradually gelling as a team. However, it is too early to say we are out of the running for the League championship. There is still a long way to go and ample time to turn things around," the Johannesburg-born player says.
