Nigeria: Futa to Commission N250 Million Worth Projects

PROJECTS worth about N250million are billed for commissioning this week as the Federal University of Technology Akure FUTA holds its 20th convocation ceremony.

Others include a technological museum said to be the first of its kind in the country, the Geotechnical laboratory built by the former Niger State governor Alhaji Kure and the 500 capacity lecture theater built by the former Yobe State governor, Alhaji Buka Ibrahim.

Addressing newsmen weekend the Chairman ceremonial Committee of the University Professor Biyi Daramola said the museum will focus on teaching and research to launch Nigeria into the technological age.The museum according to him" will have materials telling history of the technological advancement of the human race on display.

Daramola pointed out that" the university had over the years embarked on gathering of technological antiquities with the aim of preserving them for posterity so that students of the institution and visitors to the museum would get a glimpse of the past in the area of technology.

The collections " would also include modern equipments that will signpost the current state of technology in the world so that the evolution of modern technology would be better appreciated by those who visit the place especially the students.

Other projects to be commissioned are a volley-ball and basket-ball court located at the University Sports Complex, the revamped and repositioned filling station sited at the University Main Gate and the first phase of the campus beautification project.

He pointed out that the University cannot appoint Professors while administrative duties have been hampered.

However the university has no list of honorary degree awardees this year contrary to the norm in recent years due to what Daramola said was the absence of a university council to approve the list adding that the non-inauguration of a new council after the dissolution of the last one chaired by Dr. Dejo Raimi is also constituting impediments to the appointment of professors by the expected to deliver an address.
