Abuja — Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamako, has pleaded with Senators to fast-track action on the alarming desert encroachment in the northern part of the country by passing into law the bill to establish a desert control commission.
Alhaji Wamako made the call when he hosted the senate delegation to Sokoto to access the level of desertification in the area.
According to the governor, "I support what the Senators, especially those from Sokoto, are doing to highlight this problem.
"I am particularly happy that Senators from other parts of the country are here to support efforts being made to prevent this menace.
"I also want to use this opportunity to appeal to the Senate to give urgent attention to the bill on the desertification control commission currently before them."
The governor also expressed concern at the rate desertification was taking over the area.
Earlier, a member of the group and Chairman Senate Services Committee, Senator Effiong Bob, said the visit afforded him the opportunity to have a first- hand experience on the level of desert encroachment in the north.
According to him, "What I saw in Gidan Kaura in Gada Local government is a serious problem.
The level of desertification is simply unacceptable and I am sure my colleagues in the Senate will ensure that we support every effort which will push back the desert."
Also, Senate Chief Whip and leader of the delegation, Senator Kanti Bello, said the decision to bring Senators to the desert affected areas was to provide them the opportunity to have an idea of what the people are suffering.
