Uganda: Kayunga Farmers to Get Aid

Kampala — FARMERS in Kayunga district will be assisted in making quality wine and juice from their produce.

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) east and southern Africa regional director, Ides De Willesbois, said this would enable the farmers sell finished goods at higher prices.

Willesbois was touring a wine and juice processing plant at Kiwunya village in Kangulumira sub-county on Wednesday.

He said IFAD would provide assistance through the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) programme.

"We hope that value addition to agricultural products will increase the farmers' income," Willesbois said.

He also led a delegation of over 30 people from Uganda, South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi and Madagascar on a tour of a 50-acre pineapple and banana garden at Kikwanya village.

He said the tour was intended to equip participants who came from pineapple-growing areas with better skills.

The delegates were participants of the IFAD workshop, which closed on Friday at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort.

The district NAADS coordinator, Ali Lule, said pineapple growing, poultry and diary farming were some of the enterprises chosen by the NAADS farmers in the sub-county.
