Kampala — BUKOTO South MP, Mathius Nsubuga has been released from Luzira Prison, where he had been taken last week for failure to clear a sh11.2m debt.

Nsubuga, who is also the secretary general of the Democratic Party, was on Thursday committed to Luzira Prison for six months for failure to pay the money he owed to Madinah Nakabiito, a businesswoman based in Nansana, Wakiso district.

Yesterday, several MPs congratulated Nsubuga upon seeing him at the Parliament Buildings. He, however, declined to divulge details when asked by the press to comment about his arrest and release.

DP President Ssebaana Kizito told The NewVision that he was happy about Nsubuga's release, but also declined to comment on how the money to clear the debt was raised.

Early on Thursday, Nsubuga had survived being taken to Luzira when Mengo Court magistrate Amos Kwizera allowed him to pay sh2m out of the sh8.4m he owes city businessman, Bosco Muyira.

Ssebaana said that Nsubuga's arrest was politically motivated.

"He has been having debts and paying back," Ssebaana said.
