Uganda: Floods Displace Thousands in Moyo

Kampala — THOUSANDS of people have been displaced by floods in Moyo district, Obongi county MP Hassan Kaps Fungaroo has said.

In a press briefing at Parliament yesterday, Fungaroo said about 80 families were left homeless, with no food, medical care and clothing.

He said Itula, Obongi, Difule, Lefori, Gimara and Aliba sub-counties were the most affected.

"We call upon the disaster preparedness minister, Musa Echeru and the Government to come to our rescue," Fungaroo appealed.

He said children and women trek long distances for assistance in Adjuman district, adding that only the Uganda Red Cross had taken relief aid to the area.

"Diseases like cholera, malaria and Bilharzia are affecting the people, especially children and women. There is also a shortage of food because the floods have destroyed all the crops," he added.

Fungaroo said Amua Bridge, which connected Difulu-Laropi and Ibowa roads, had been washed away, cutting off Adjuman district from Moyo.

Other roads affected by the floods, he said, are Obonjo-Moyo and Panjara-Difule, which goes to Nimule town in Southern Sudan.

Last week, floods hit the north-eastern region, killing two soldiers in Bukwo and Nakapiririti districts.
