Uganda: Politics Hampers Real Estate Growth

Kampala — PROPERTY developers have complained of the excessive political interference in the real estate sector, especially when largescale housing projects are involved.

Through their umbrella body, the Uganda Property Developers Association (UPDA), they said many large housing projects have flopped in the past few years due to political interference.

"Most, if not all these projects, have failed to take off due to abrupt and excessive political interference."Projects are stopped or suspended regardless of the financial and legal implications of such stoppages," Boney Katatumba, the UPDA outgoing chairman, said.

Katatumba cited the Nsimbe project by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and Mugoya Estates, the Nakawa project by the Comer Group and the NSSF Temangalo project.
