Uganda: Health Staff Warned Against

Abdallah Ogwang

17 November 2008

Kampala — PRIMARY health care state minister Dr. Emmanuel Otaala has cautioned health workers against smuggling drugs from the Government health facilities.

He said there had been a public outcry about shortage of drugs at the health centres yet every district receives sh100m each year to purchase drugs.

"We do not want to see people dying of preventable diseases," he said.

Otaala was commissioning a maternity ward and out-patient department worth sh200m at Ogur Health Centre IV in Lira district on Thursday.

He said the Government had allocated sh18b to renovate health centres and improve the condition of health facilities across the country.

The minister said the Government would control malaria through indoor residual spraying.

He expressed concern that only 20% of the population know their sero-status. He encouraged the public to know their status, saying those who are HIV-positive can get treatment and live normally.

Felix Omodi, the country director of Medical Teams International Uganda, one of the groups that constructed the ward and health department, said his organisation was providing emergency health care services in Lira and Pader districts.
