Windhoek — A week-long meeting of the Council of Traditional Leaders elected Immanuel #Nu-Axa /Gaseb as Deputy Chairperson of the Council on Friday.
Chief Gaseb filled the vacancy left by the death of Chief Munyuku Nguvauva II.
Speaking at the closing session, Prime Minister Nahas Angula congratulated Chief /Gaseb on his election.
The Premier also congratulated four newly recognised traditional authorities - Kakurukouye Traditional Authority under Chief Vemuii Tjambiru, Simon Kooper Traditional Authority under Chief Fredrik Hans, Daure-Daman Traditional Authority under Chief EliasTaniseb, and Aodaman Traditional Authority under Chief Petrus Ukongo.
"As a person responsible for overseeing the successful implementation of Government policies and programmes, I want to assure you, Chiefs and other senior traditional leaders, that your advice will always be taken into consideration, and that the concerns you raised during the course of this meeting are addressed by the Government as soon as possible," Angula said.
He said the Council plays an important role in shaping national policies and programmes on the administration and utilisation of communal land.
The representatives of all 46 recognised traditional authorities discussed a wide range of issues such as an increase of stock theft along national borders, particularly the Angolan border; Government's resettlement programme and progress with regard to the registration of customary land rights; construction of earth dams; progress on the implementation of the Community Courts Act; issuing of identity documents in the regions; and the registration of orphans and vulnerable children for social grants.
