Nigeria: Community Warns Chevron

18 November 2008

The Orere-Yanagho Coastal communities have warned Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, to desist from further dealing with a cartel instead of the Council of elders of the communities, saying the practice has continued to wrath underdevelopment in the entire area.

They also said the non-recognition of the council of elders and CNL un-ethical practices of allegedly giving money/contracts to a few Concerned persons remains absurd and un-becoming of a Corporate body whose over 20 years of operations in the area has yielded no tangible benefit to the vast majority of the people.

In a letter addressed to the President, Chevron Corporation, USA and signed by the Chairman of the Orere-Yanagho Coastal Communities, Comrade Okandugba Etuwewe and Mr. Jolomi Ogiden, Mobilization Officer they said the GMOU-Chevron Offshore Operation was a fraud designed to oppress and marginalized them as the communities have no portable drinking water or electricity to date.

While giving Chevron a 14-day grace to enter into negotiation with them, they have demanded for a N100 billion compensation to kick-start development and provide basic infrastructural amenities for the communities.

They advised the President of Chevron to come visist the communities to verify their claims and ignore false reports that Chevron has provided these facilities already, saying that such report from Chevron in Nigeria is pure deceit intended to portray CNL as being socially responsible to all her host communities.
