Lagos — Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Sector Commander, Mr. Kayode Olagunju, has said between June 2, 1989 and now, 14,384 people have lost their lives through motor accident on Lagos roads.
Olagunju made this disclosure weekend in Lagos at this year's remembrance day of the victims of road accident across the world.
The Sector Commander, who said the Command's focus was not only to remember the dead ones but also to commiserate with the family and friends they left behind, said their main focus is to sanitise and sensitise Lagos road users on the importance of road safety.
In his words: "United Nations set aside every third Sunday of November for the remembrance of people that died in auto accident. That is why we are doing our own right here in Lagos. It is alarming to know that road accident kills faster than HIV/AIDS. At least 14 people died daily on Nigerian roads. Your guess is as good as mine when it comes to Lagos. Some of the auto accidents are not reported and therefore not recorded, but between June 2nd 1989 till date, 41,384 victims of auto accident were recorded in Lagos.
"Auto accident is the function of the positive attitude you neglect and the negative attitude you imbibe. We should all be conscious of our safety, obey rules and regulations on the highways. You could pray and fast for safety, but the most important of it all is that you take precaution and obey the simple road safety rules and regulations. Whenever an auto accident happens it is the dependants of these victims that suffer it. I pray that God grant them fortitude to bear the loss and meet them at their very points of needsî, Olagunju prayed.
He called on road users in Lagos and its environs to take precaution in the forthcoming sallah and Christmas celebrations. "Life has no duplicate", he said.
