Angola: U.S. Interested in Countries Maritime Security

17 November 2008

Luanda — The United States of America is much interested in Angola's maritime security, particularly in its economic and oil producing zone.

This was said Sunday in Luanda by visiting commander of the US Naval Forces for Europe and Africa, adm. Mark Fitzgerald.

The officer said so to the press on arrival in Luanda, for a two-day official visit to Angola, meant for the reinforcement of bilateral cooperation in the military field.

He said he was much interested in Angola's maritime security, expressing the hope that ways for a combined action will be established.

Mark Fitzgerald expressed a particular concern about Angola's zone of exclusive economic interest and protection of the oil industry, in addition to the trafficking of human beings that is rife in the world.

He explained the US interest in reinforced military cooperation with Angola saying there are things in common regarding the economy and the fact that the African nation is one of the main suppliers of crude oil to his country.

The officer said as well that although his action is mainly directed to matters concerning the sea, he will seize the opportunity to learn about Angola's effort towards peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in view of its role as a member of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Defence and Security Commission troika.
