One hundred million pounds will be channeled into fighting HIV/AIDS in Nigeria for the next six years, says the British Minister for International Development, Ivan Lewis.
A press release yesterday said that the new six year 'Enhancing Nigeria's Response to HIV/AIDS' (ENR) programme will improve access to prevention, treatment, care and support for the most vulnerable HIV infection.
The ENR programme is expected to reach 27 million young people with HIV and safer sex messages and will use 1.2billion condoms to reduce the number of new infections by 50,000 every year.
The release said the Department For International Development (DFID) will work with the National Agency for Control of Aids (NACA) as part of a special relationship between the two organizations in Nigeria.
The Nigeria national prevalence of HIV/AIDS has gone down from 5.8% in 2000 to 4.4% in 2005 to the latest figure of 3.6%.
Available statistics shows that three million people are HIV positive and one million children have been orphaned by the disease as the country remains the second highest with people living with the disease in the world.
