Nigeria: Leadership Weekend Story

11 November 2008

editorial

Our lead story in last LEADERSHIP WEEKEND edition entitled: "Yar'Adua, Sick Again", has understandably caused a lot of pains in some quarters. We have already admitted in our statement on Sunday that portions of the story did not meet the high standard we set for ourselves as a newspaper and have since apologised to the president and his family .

Yes, the president was at the National Mosque, Abuja, for the Juma'at Prayers on Friday and he was also at the state function at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, throughout Friday. He was also at some state function throughout Saturday.

As we said in our statement in LEADERSHIP SUNDAY "today, we are already doing some in-house cleansing. Those who were supposed to be covering the Sheraton function and obviously didn't have been relieved of their duties and the process is continuous."

LEADERSHIP, like all other newspapers in Nigeria, has been concerned about the president's state of health. And the fact that we carry stories about his health does not in anyway suggest that we wish him ill. We have said it is not an offence to be sick. We have even in the past called for prayers for the president's quick recovery as Nigerians who must wish their leaders well. We have criticised this government whenever we see it taking the wrong steps and have also commended it when commendable steps have been taken.

As a newspaper, we are committed to good governance, justice, democracy, the rule of law, credible elections and a country governed by civilised standards of statecraft. And that we shall continue to do.
