Lagos — MEDICAL and Health Worker's Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), on Monday suspended its planned industrial action, initially billed for yesterday.

The suspension of the strike came over the weekend, from the outcome of the meeting between MHWUN and LUTH management.

The said aggrieved parties agreed to return to the negotiating table within this week to resolve all the issues and a new date, November 21st was fixed for the strike action, if by then management has not resolved all issues.

Daily Champion recalls that the health sector had anncounced their intention to commence on an industrial action on August 6 to protest among others, the non-payment of monetisation arrears, gratuity and pension and non-implementation of the CONTISS salary scale arears.

A reliable source who spoke under anonymity at LUTH told Daily Champion that management was doing its best to ensure the strike action will not hold on Friday.

MHWUN members which include Senior Staff association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives among others had on July 8, staged a warning strike which the government had over looked.

A member of MHWUN, who does not want his name in print told Daily Champion that "it seems this government is taking the health workers for a ride, But this time, we want to tell them that enough is enough.

The federal government had approved the monetisation policy in december 2003 to take effect immediately.

But the Federal Ministry of Health implemented the policy from only October 1st, 2005, whereas government approval was to take effect from December 2003.

The workers are demanding for the balance of 2003 and 2005 entitlement amongst other demands.
