Nigeria: Area Council Youths Sensitised On HIV/Aids

Souths in Kwali and Gwagwalada Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory have been sensitised on the realities of HIV/AIDS in the society.

The three-day sensitisation workshop LEADERSHIP gathered was organised by Jama'atud-da'wah, Fau'ad Lababidi Islamic Acdademy (JADAFIA) in collobaration with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to educate the youths in local communities on how to reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS and drugs abuse among youths.

In her speech, the Amira of Jama'atud-da'awa, Hajiya Alawiyya Ummar, stated that the workshop will also inform the youths on what to do when they are confronted with the deadly disease. She said the programme was the second of its kind and was aimed at enlightening the youths on the causes as well as how to prevent HIV.

Rakiya Shehu Bamalli, the Deputy Amira, explained that the local youths populaton were their target due to the low level of awareness among them and their manner of wearing indecent clothes, especially the girls.

She appealed to the National Assembly to act fast on the bill on dress codes in order to restore dignity to the public appearance of the people, especially women.

She said the workshop would cover the six area councils of the FCT.

In his remark, Dr. Jamiu, HIV/AIDS division, Federal ministry of Health, disclosed that a lot of similar programmes were going on at the federal level that focused on how to control sexually transmitted diseases, especially through awareness campaigns. He added that the ministry was building the capacity of health care providers to enable them provide effective treatment for such kinds of diseases.

The participants however, expressed hope that such workshops in future would include free HIV test for participants.
