Zimbabwe: Dube Honoured

18 November 2008

Harare — FORMER highlanders striker Mkhokheli Dube who has won several awards in his four years in the US, continued to hog the limelight when being nominated the Major League Soccer Rookie of the Year first runner-up.

It was another good soccer season for the young man who represented his country at Under-17, Under-20 and Under-23 level. He also played in the COSAFA age-group tournaments and the African Champions League.

Dube came second to Sean Franklin while Houston's Geoff Cameron was third in an awards ceremony held last week.

Despite his good run of form, the 25-year-old is yet to attract the attention of national selectors.

With the galaxy of stars who include David Beckham and Freddie Adu, that league cannot continue to be overlooked. It has several national team players of a number of nations.

He was drafted at number eight in the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft.

Very quick and skilful on the ball and a prolific goalscorer at college level, Dube thrives on workrate and ability to take on defenders.

He was the 2007 Big South Conference Player of the Year and a NSCAA All-South Atlantic star and a two-time All-Big South performer.

In 2006 he made it into the Big South All-Tournament Team before going on to play two seasons at Coastal Carolina after transferring from NAIA powerhouse Lindsey Wilson.

In the four years he played college football Dube made 76 appearances and scored 52 goals and had 25 assists.
