Abuja — While the jubilation over the victory of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in Edo state lasted, militant groups in the Niger Delta area have called on the unionist governor to perform.
The militants, under the umbrella of Niger Delta Watchdog, said Oshiomhole should employ the same vigour used in actualising his mandate to provide services for the common people of the state.
The group also hails the judiciary which it described as the bastion of the nation's democracy.
The Niger Delta Watchdog, consists of the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND), Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) and the Reformed Grand Alliance of Niger Delta (GRAND).
According to a statement signed by Gen Okara and Sam Ebiye, president and secretary respectively, and made available to newsmen, the group wants the best of quality leadership from the newest governor in the country.
"We call on Adams Oshiomhole to carry out selfless service for the people of Edo state. Let him always remember that the way he muzzled to victory is the same way the common man muzzles to survive in this dehumanising society. We congratulate the Appeal Court judges, Edo people, and from Oshiomhole, we expect the best," the group stated.
The group also commended the judiciary for the excellent job in trying to ensure the survival of the nation's democracy.
At last, the judicial system, the group said, "is beginning to understand its essence in maintaining democracy in Nigeria where the politics of roguery has continued to foster underdevelopment.
"The judicial institution is the bedrock of democracy all over the world and where it becomes covertly penetrated, the state is bound to fail. We commend the uprightness of the Appeal Court judges in the Oshiomhole vs. Osunbor case of Edo State. We await that of Delta, Ondo."
The group also urges President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to appoint somebody that will carry out developmental programme of the region to head the newly created Niger Delta ministry.
It also advised that the president should avoid those who have been in the corridor of power in the past and have not made any impact.
