Calabar — The Cross River State Executive Council has approved the contract for urban roadway lighting projects for Calabar metropolis at the cost of N908 million. Addressing newsmen at the end of the weekly State Executive Council meeting, the commissioner for Works, Hon Bassey Ekefre said the contract, which covers Atimbo Road, Akai Efa, Eta Agbo, Ekorinim would be completed before Christmas this year and would be extended to Calabar South local government area next year.

Ekefre said the council had also given approval for the award of contract for the construction and completion of some urban roads in Calabar and Ugep, as well as given approval for the award of contract for construction of a two-storey permanent office complex of the office of the auditor-general of the state at N66 million.

Again, Ekefre explained that roads to be constructed in Calabar Municipality included Archibong Eso, Ibok Street, Asari Eso Layout, Mutaka, Line B Federal Housing, and link road to the abattoir, adding that one kilometre road to Idomi from the Calabar - Ikom Highway would cost N76 million.

The commissioner attributed the slow pace of road construction in Calabar South under the urban renewal programme to heavy rainfall, promising that the tempo of work would increase when rain subsided, stressing that 10 major streets were earmarked to be completed.

Contributing, the chief press secretary and special assistant, Media, Mr. Patrick Ugbe, highlighted that the lighting project, apart from aiding security, was also intended to cover the whole of Calabar metropolis as the erection of poles in Calabar South would commence early next year towards realisation of government's desire of getting to those that need the government most..
