Nigeria: Yuguda Turns Secondary School Teacher

16 November 2008

Bauchi — Worried by the deteriorating condition of the education sector in the state, Governor Isa Yuguda has fulfilled his promise to go back to teach in some secondary schools in the state.

The governor's proclamation, which many believe was just a political statement, has become a reality as he took the chalk to teach economics to final year students of the Government Girls College, Bauchi for more than one hour.

Yuguda, a graduate of the University of Jos, and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, could not hide his joy after the lesson in a class of over 40 students.

He urged all qualified civil servants, including journalists, to offer themselves for voluntary services, to save the state's education system and the future of the children from decay.

Yuguda had earlier pointed out that when he took over power in 2007, he inherited over 150,000 secondary school students with a little over 1000 teachers, a situation he described as disastrous, hence his decision to engage more teachers while hundreds of retired ones have also been re-engaged on contract, subject to renewal after every three years.

It would be recalled that the government, a few weeks ago, distributed five million text books to primary and secondary schools, in addition to the 45 per cent salary increment for teachers as well as rehabilitation and reconstruction of some secondary schools as part of measures to improve teaching and learning condition in schools.
