Abuja — In an effort to foster a vibrant literary culture in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Abuja Literary Society (ALS) has embarked on the provision of creativity centres in public secondary schools.
Unveiling its second creativity centre within a week, at the Model Science Primary school in Garki II recently, the chairman of the board of trustees of the literary society, Mr. Ferdinard Agu, noted that it is part of an outreach programme that will encourage the growth of literature, especially in government schools in order to build their minds and position them to be great leaders tomorrow.
He also said that the outreach had its target at 20 centres in the FCT even as they intend to partner with private schools in the future.
The co-ordinator of the literary society, Ken Ike Ikere, stressed that apart from stocking the centres with books, its unique aspect is that the members of the ALS will volunteer time to mentor students in arts, music, creative writing, reading and craft making.
"We will give our time, our knowledge and skills and, in the process, the students and volunteers will become more creative," he said.
Reacting to the gesture, the headmistress of the school, Mrs. Maric Okeke, said that it was a much-needed innovation that could help in shaping the intellect of students, even as it would make their work a lot easier and effective.
