Uyo — In its efforts to make life better for the people, the administration of Governor Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State commissioned over 556 projects, including 256 in rural areas, within the first 12 months of his coming to office.
The Finance Commissioner, Mr. Bassey Albert Akpan, made this disclosure when he granted audience to the World Bank Mission, led by its Sectoral Manager from Washington DC , Mr Eurtache Ovayoro, who visited him in his office at the state secretariat in Uyo.
"Akwa Ibom is in a hurry to catch up with other developed states in the country so that our people, especially the rural dwellers, can benefit from the dividends of democracy".
According to him, another round of 500 rural projects would soon be commissioned by Governor, Godswill Akpabio.
He expressed appreciation to the World Bank for partnering the state, especially at a time when the it is in dire need of investors, to support her in her developmental stride.
Akpan opined that such partnership was in line with the vision of the present administration which planned to bring development nearer to the people, adding that the state had shown commitment to the partnership, having paid its counterpart funds as required
He described government's approach to the implementation of its development programmes as holistic, adding that it was meant to touch on the lives of the people and to meet their needs and expectations.
Akpan asserted that the vision of making Akwa Ibom state an investment destination and bringing her into the world tourism map, has it that, by 2011, every community in the state must have access to the basic needs of life, such as pipe-borne water, electricity and quality healthcare services.
Responding, the World Bank sectoral manager commended the development initiatives of the state government and described Governor Akpabio as a leader whose desire to make life better for his people was borne out of genuineness. He stressed that Uyo, the capital city, was very attractive to visitors because of its neatness , and urged the people to be supportive and show understanding with the vision of the state government to be fully realised.
