Nigeria: FCT Residents Demand Pedestrian Bridges

Bamun Nii-Veror

18 November 2008

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have called on the supervising minister for the FCT, Mr. Remi Babalola, to ensure that pedestrian bridges are strategically located to avert avoidable accidents in the FCT.

The residents who spoke to LEADERSHIPon how to tackle the problem of crossing some areas in Abuja, maintained that places like Lagos ensure that pedestrian bridges are built where traffic volume is high.

According to Mr. Solomon Abam, even Zebra crossing signs are not inscribed on FCT roads.

Abam said places like schools, markets and other busy areas, which under normal circumstances would have had zebra signs in the absence of pedestrian bridges, do not have any of these, thereby leaving residents at the mercy of motorists.

Mr. Paul Afime, also a resident, mentioned areas like Garki market, UTC, Wuse Market, Sheraton Junction, Utako Market, Nyanya checkpoint amongst others as areas which ought to have pedestrian bridges.

He explained that Lagos used to have a similar problem but that now it is a thing of the past.

They, therefore, called on the FCT management to look into the issue, as according to them, most people have lost their lives in the process of crossing road, a situation they said could be avoided.
