Nigeria: Yar'Adua's Wife Urges Students to Shun Vices

Umuahia — THE First Lady, Hajia Turai Yar'Adua has called on Nigerian students to shun social evils such as examination malpractices, cultism, among others, and study hard to prepare for their future.

Hajia Yar'Adua spoke weekend, at Abia State University, Uturu, where she was conferred with Honourary Degree of Public Administration, also urged the students to pursue their academic programe with zeal and seriousness.

Represented by the First Lady of Ebonyi State, Mrs. Josephine Elechi, Hajia Yar'Adua equally called on the lecturers to continue to work hard and maintain the dignity which the university system is known for.

She noted that education is the bedrock of human development and further charged the students to be disciplined to be able to pass out of the university in hounor.

Addressing the convocation ceremony, where a total of 4,630 grandaunts passed out, Abia State governor, Chief Theodore Orji commended the management of the institution for working hard to see that the university grows from strength to strength. He expressed satisfaction with the achievement of the present Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mkpa A. Mkpa and his team.

Orji noted that Government has not reneged in its promises since he assumed office as Governor, and promised that with the performance of the management, the Government will do more for the institution as in his words "the management has surpassed our expectations".

He expressed the hope that the erosion menace ravaging the university would be included in the programme when the declaration of the South East zone as a disaster area begins.

The governor threw his weight behind the management of the University over controversial Multiple Choice System, saying that if the students are doing well in outside examinations, it means there is nothing wrong with the system.

A breakdown of the graduates indicate that 5 passed in First Class while 487 obtained Second Class Upper Division.
