Tunis — During a press conference held at the head office of the Tunisian Central Bank, the Director General of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mr Dominique Strauss Kahn said that Tunisia will witness "a strong economic growth, in spite of the world financial crisis which will affect in different degrees all countries". He also added that Maghrebi countries which are not oil producers are capable of overcoming the consequences of this crisis, "with a minimum of damage".
Mr Strauss Kahn who is currently visiting Tunisia on the occasion of the 50 th anniversary of the Tunisian central Bank , stressed that the country's monetary and financial policy is "wise ", remarking that the progressive economic opening up of the country will enable it to master this process.
He also highlighted the importance of working towards a Maghrebi economic integration, which is a factor of growth capable of confronting the eventual consequences of the world economic crisis.
Within this framework, he called on Maghreb countries to set up a Maghrebi Bank of Investments (BMCI) which will reinforce commercial ventures, as well capitals in the region and which will strengthen the role of the private sector in promoting joint projects.
Mr Strauss Kahn also said that the Maghreb will witness an important growth rate during 2009; he further voiced the IMF's commitment to strengthen the region's integration process.
