Kampala — THE Minister of Water and Environment Maria Mutagamba, on Tuesday commissioned the Kasambira Water System project in Kamuli district.
Worth sh398m, the project built by the Government in Bugulumbya sub-county, will provide the 6,000 residents with 15,000 litres of water per hour.
Present at the commissioning were the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, the Minister for Regional Cooperation and also the Buzaya county MP, Isaac Musumba and the Kamuli LC5 chairperson, Stephen Mubiri.
The commissioner of rural water and supply, Aaron Kabirizi, said the water system, implemented by his ministry, includes a 90,000 litre water tank, 23 yard raps, water kiosks and a generator-operated water pump.
Kadaga expressed displeasure at the low turn up of residents at the function. She said their absence showed they do not appreciate government efforts to provide them with clean drinking water.
"I am not happy with the low turn up of residents of this area to this function. I only see pupils of Kasambira Primary School. Where are Kasambira elders and residents?" Kadaga asked.
"When I pass through Kasambira on the way to my home in Mbulamuti or when the President is heading to Kamuli, residents of Kasambira stand by the roadside and talk all sorts of bad words," said Kadaga, also the Woman Member of Parliament for Kamuli.
Mubiru said Kamuli's water coverage stands at a low of 55%, which he said, the district leadership is working to improve.
He said the district was finalising a water design for Kisozi trading center and that Kamuli Hospital was connected to the water pipe system constructed in Namwendwa.
"We are happy as a district that we have a sh739m budget for water this financial year that we received from the local government. We are going to use it in improving on the water coverage," said the district chairman.
He advised the residents to commence rain water harvesting to maintain hygiene.
