Kampala — Private airlines in Uganda have come and gone. Captain Roy's airline Africa One barely survived a year before it folded, as did the East African and more recently, Victoria International.
However, one airline that that has beaten the one-year jinx is Air Uganda, owned by the Aga Khan.
Last Friday at their offices in Kololo, a beaming Peter De Waal, the chief executive officer, proudly announced that the airline is here to stay.
He said it had not been an easy ride, citing the global credit crunch, rising fuel crisis and the decline in the number of passengers as some of the challenges.
At the celebration, Air Uganda erected tents representing the different destinations they fly to like Zanzibar, Nairobi, Juba and Kilimanjaro. The guests were treated to drinks from the East African countries that Air Uganda plies.
Among the notable guests was transport minister John Nasasira and Kampala Mayor Nasser Sebaggala, who was the chief guest.
By 10:00pm, it was like the party which actually started at 6:00pm, had just begun. The entertainment was provided by a live band and HB Toxic. Although a drizzle before the event made the ground soggy, guests did not complain as they pondered about Air Uganda's future destinations.
