Uganda: Christopher Mukiibi Returns

Kampala — IT is not always that the phrase, old is gold, applies whenever the old is engaged. But veteran dramatist Christopher Mukiibi, deserved applause for his play Abasa Nabasa at Theatre La Bonita over the last two weekends.

Unlike many, he has not told a long narrative, but has remained interesting.

"I will remain in theatre because there is a lot that is not right," he says.

He has also brought in a cast that included young beautiful girls. He uses the tramp characters, a cobbler (Dickson Zizinga) and a shoe shinner (Ben Ssebunya) to drive the plot.

The story is explained by the observation and gossip about two men who swap daughters as girlfriends. All this is brought to light only at the end.

The action takes place in a flat, giving Mukiibi the opportunity to use a big cast that remains tagged to his story. There is the guy who sells water to the residents, the youthful man who sleeps with as many girls as he can before morning. There are the witch doctors and the born-agains.

Everyone seems to be mentally incapacitated to deal with life's troubles, save the tramps.
