Abuja — National Chairman of the Action Congress (AC), Bisi Akande, said on Tuesday that former President Olusegun Obasanjo reneged on a gentleman agreement he reached with the leadership of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, over the 2003 general elections because of his rejection by the group at polls earlier in 1999.
Akande said at a press conference in Abuja that the former president was yet to forgive Afenifere because of the manner it (Afenifere) frustrated his (Obasanjo's) effort to win the Yoruba votes at the polls at the time.
Akande was in 2003 Alliance for Democracy (AD) governor in Osun State.
Giving an insight into the betrayal that led to the loss of four of the five states controlled by the AD in 2003, Akande said "Obasanjo was yet to forgive Afenifere for using the AD to get him rejected by the Yoruba people in the 1999 elections.
"Since then Obasanjo has done all within his power to neutralise Afenifere's myth in Yoruba politics by using Akinfenwa as his agent to destroy AD."
Akande also lampooned some members of the Afenifere whom he described as those that conspired with Obasanjo to wreck Afenifere in 2003.
To him, a group within Afenifere led by Ayo Fasoranti, Olu Falae, Ayo Adebanjo, Femi Okuronmu and others who allegedly conspired with the former president to wreck AD in 2003 were no more that traitors.
He said such people cannot lead Afenifere because they lacked the necessary brain power to tackle the present Yoruba complicated affairs.
