The Police in Abuja yesterday killed two armed robbery suspects who attempted to break into a bank in the Central Business District.Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), Federal Capital Territory Police Command, Rabiu Dayi, said a customer telephoned the police and informed them about the arrival of robbers in two vehicles.
They parked their cars by Ceddi Plaza which is located close to the bank. He said a combined team of Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) and Abuja Crime Control Squad (ACCOS) was drafted to the place.
He said, "As soon as the policemen arrived, the robbers began to shoot at them and thus, they had no alternative other than to engage them. During the shootout two of the robbers using a Honda Accord car fled while the other two in the Toyota Camry with registration number EL 442 ABJ, kept shooting. Eventually they were over powered by the police and were killed in the cross fire."
He said a Superintendent of police, Ben Igwe was hit by a bullet in the stomach and is receiving medical attention at the National Hospital Abuja while another officer who was shot by the robbers in the leg has been treated and discharged from the hospital.
The AC said people should avoid carrying much money on them and should be monitoring the movement of people around them. He said people should inform the police of any suspicious characters around them.
