Jos — The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has issued another 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to implement the new scheme of service the union negotiated with it since 2001 or face a possible strike. The ultimatum is the second one this year.

The polytechnic teachers issued the current ultimatum to the government at the end of their 60th national executive council meeting.

The ultimatum which is contained in the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting signed by the national president of the union, Mohammed Ali Kabir, gave the government 21 working days to sign and implement the ASUP/ Federal Government agreement of 2001 which includes the implementation of 65 years retirement age for academic staff, implementation of a new scheme of service and admission based on the carrying capacities of the polytechnics.

The union in the communiqué also noted that the non constitution of the governing boards in polytechnics was adversely affecting the smooth running of the institutions, and advised government to expedite action on the matter.

Other issues discussed at the meeting include the non appointment of substantive rectors in some polytechnics, saying the development is unhealthy and not acceptable while it also frowned at the 30-40 science/ non science admission stream which they say amounts to severing the already existing staff of the institutions.
