Kaduna — Nigeria may not achieve the Vision 2020 and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) if technical education is not improved and given adequate support, the Director General, Industrial Training Fund, Professor Longmass Wapmuk has said.
He said capacity building and technical education were vital to achieving the Vision 2020, MDGs as well as President Umaru Musa Yar'adua's seven point agenda because technical training is the engine room which drives the economy of any country. Wapmuk noted that ITF was not relenting in its efforts as prime skill trainers in the country to help Nigeria achieve the projects while seeking support, especially in the establishment of 15 training centres across the country to ensure adequate technical training for Nigerians. According to him, "Capacity building is key to the development of any nation. Nothing can be done without building capacity to achieve it and ITF is contributing to that to take Nigeria out of the woods. It would have been great to see Nigeria among the G20 meeting held last week in the United States, but if ITF is given adequate support, we can ensure that Nigeria become a member of that group."
Wapmuk who was represented by Mr Tim Idahosa Umoren at the opening ceremony of the five day ITF administrative and human resource officers workshop/forum held yesterday in Kaduna noted that a well supported ITF would reduce youth and general unemployment as medium and small scale enterprises would be driven through skilful training which would in turn drive the economy.
