Jos — An expert in Human Resource Development has explained why having a degree no longer guarantees a good job in Nigeria, saying this is partly due to the high number of graduates currently produced and the quality of education offered which does not match the required skills in the industries.

Mrs. Kacholom Gyang of the Human Resource Department of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) who presented a paper at a workshop to prepare students of the University of Jos on careers, observed that before, the university degree qualified people for jobs because the number of graduates were not so high.

She said that is why opportunities for learning on the job are reducing because people with required skills abound while competition is very high. Mrs Gyang advised parents not to choose careers for their children but to guide them in making such decisions as she said choosing a career is best done by the persons concerned and that it is a very simple process.

"Choosing the right career is long, tasking and involves processes and you give it the time it deserves. Career planning is a multi step process that involves learning enough about yourself and the occupation you are considering in order to make an informed decision," she advised.

She added that while choosing careers, people should avoid concentrating on only what they think is best at that moment as that might not matter in the future and that money should not be the most important thing to consider when choosing while people should be prepared to change their careers at any time.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. sonny Tyoden in his remarks, encouraged students to explore diverse areas while choosing a career, saying the advancement office of the university had done well to initiate the programme as it would go a long way in assisting the students.
