Former Director of Kaduna State Muslims Pilgrims' Welfare Board, Alhaji Nuhu Mohammed Zakari has been arrested for allegedly collecting N445, 000 from 70 year old Malam Usman Yusuf, an intending pilgrim and not remitting it to the board's coffers, the state police command said yesterday.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Aminu Lawal, the suspect confessed his crime to the police. "He did not procure the seat and he failed to return the money to the owner',' the PPRO said, adding that "investigations so far show that he converted the money for his personal use." However, Alhaji Nuhu's alleged accomplice Awwal Abubakar is said to be at large, the police spokesman said. The victim, according to reports, hailed from Tashan Aya, in Soba local government area of Kaduna state. He gave the suspect the money to help him secure a hajj seat but he become suspicious as days went by and his chances of performing this year's hajj became dim. When he could not ascertain his fate of traveling to the holy land he alerted the police.
