Eighteen players out of 65 that are being owed monies by various Nigerian clubs yesterday received che-ques from the Nigeria Premier League.
The cheques were the out-come of the Arbitration Commit-tee's decision, which directed the clubs to pay the players and coaches their outstanding enti-tlements which totaled N65.5 million.
Speaking at the cheque pre-sentation ceremony in Abuja, NPL Board Chairman Chief Oyuki Obaseki said the era of players' welfare taking the back seat in Nigerian league is over, as the NPL would not fold its hands and watch the players been maltreated.
He explained that the delay in the cheque presentation was delayed because the NPL Board resolved to deduct the money owed the players and coaches from the clubs' title sponsorship percentage, which did not come until three weeks ago.
Obaseki urged the players to make judicious use of the money, stressing that "this is the time for you to invest in your future".
According to Obaseki, "the life you live today will determine the way you will live after reti-rement".
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Ifeanyi Ofor of Rangers International of Enugu thanked the Nigeria Premier League Board for working hard to ensure that Nigerian players begin to enjoy the benefit of their sweat.
