Angola: Constitutional Courts to Set up Organisation in 2009

Luanda — The chief judge of Angola's Constitutional Court, Rui Ferreira, this Tuesday left for Brasilia city, in Brazil, to attend on November 21 a preparatory conference for the creation of the organisation of constitutional courts of Member States of the Portuguese Speaking Countries Community (CPLP).

In brief declarations before departing, the chief judge informed that the proclamation of the institution is set for January 2009, in South Africa, at a period in which representatives of constitutional courts of various countries of the world shall be gathered in that African nation during an international forum.

He said that the date and site were chosen based on the fact that a world conference of constitutional courts will be held in South Africa, therefore CPLP member states "will avail the occasion to make the proclamation, because every constitutional court of the community shall be represented", explained the head of the delegation that travelled to Brazil.

According to the official, the guidelines that shall govern the future organisation shall be cooperation, interchange, sharing of information, transference of experiences and complementarities in the light of the work they carry out in favour of democracy in the respective societies.

The Brasília conference shall be attended by the chief judges of constitutional courts of CPLP member states or their representatives.

CPLP is made up of Angola, Brazil, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, Mozambique, Guinean Bissau, Cape Verde and East Timor.
