Uganda: Opposition Fight for Kyaddondo Seat

Kampala — ALTHOUGH they have a common voice in Parliament, the opposition parties are at each other's neck for the Kyaddondo North seat.

The parties had earlier suggested fielding a joint candidate to compete against the NRM candidate, but the DP and the PPP rejected the idea.

The inter-party cooperation parties, which are UPC, CP, JEEMA and FDC, have fielded one candidate, Pollyne Nakabuye.

While campaigning for DP's Regina Bakitte at Buwagga in Busukuma sub-county, party stalwart and CBS news anchor, Moses Kasibante, warned the residents against voting for the FDC candidate, saying the party did not support Buganda.

"Those of you who think FDC is committed to Buganda's cause, ask Lubaga North MP Beti Kamya," Kasibante said.

He also discouraged the residents against voting for the PPP candidate, Ssentamu Ssewandagi, saying the party boss, Jaberi Bidandi Ssali, was opposed to Buganda's demand for federalism.

However, Ssewandagi argues that Bidandi's view on federalism is his personal opinion and not necessarily the opinion of all PPP members.

"It is well known that I am one of the leading advocates for Buganda's interests, including federalism. That is why it is not by accident that I am an executive member of the Buganda Civic Education Committee," Ssewandagi said on Saturday during his campaign at Ttikalu in Gombe.
