Kampala — PREGNANT women in rural areas will soon access safe delivery packages to reduce deaths during and after child birth.

This follows the launch of subsidised delivery kits by Population Services International (PSI) in a $2m (about sh79.6m) safe motherhood campaign.

The kit contains Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS), home-based water treatment tablets for diarrhoea prevention and Zinc supplements.

According to the Ministry of Health, diarrhoea is one of the major causes of infant mortality. 18% of children aged 6-12 months get diarrhoea.

Dennis Kakooza, the programme manager (PSI), said on Saturday the campaign would enable women buy 'Mama Kits' containing essentials for safe delivery.

He said PSI would subsidise the price to sh3,500. The cost price is sh30,000.

He said PSI would also conduct family visits to counsel expectant mothers, discuss reproductive health issues and prevention of malaria, and explain how the kits are used. He said the programme was crucial for rural women.
