Makurdi — Benue State has embraced the new nine-year basic education curriculum, with plans to train teachers on its use. Interim Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (BSUBEB), Dr. Tornge Toranyii, who announced this while fielding questions from newsmen expressed the hope that the measure would lift the state from its educational backwardness, to compete favorably with other progressive states in the country.
"Government is totally committed to the education sector and we are sparing nothing to achieve the best in this line. That is why the Board, believing that all successes depend on the quality of the teachers, is fully ready to provide them with what it takes to effect the positive changes in our primary and secondary schools", he said, adding that the Board was partnering with the College of Education, Katsina-Ala, to further expose primary school teachers to modern educational challenges through seminars and workshops.
According to him, BSUBEB would ensure that funds accessed from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the state government are used to improve the facilities in its primary schools across the state.
While lamenting the state of handcrafts in the primary schools, Toranyii called on parents and other relevant stakeholders to assist the Board revive the subject, a development which he said was necessary to promote self-sustainability in the children.
He stressed the Board's determination to train and re-train its teachers to be in tune with modern trends. He also disclosed that the first set of pupils under the UBE programme was in JSS3 while arrangements were been made for them to write the Junior School Certificate Examinations to be conducted by the State Examinations Board.
