Nigeria: Team Meets England Again

19 November 2008

Lagos — The President of the Republic of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, and the FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter will take part in the opening ceremony of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Chile 2008, which will kick off today at the Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso Stadium in Coquimbo, Chile. The ceremonial kick-off will signify the beginning of the championship and the opening match between the host country and England.

Apart from Coquimbo, the tournament will also be played in three other Chilean cities - Chillán, La Florida (Santiago) and Temuco. Officially, this is listed as the second edition of the competition although three editions have been played. This is because FIFA usually starts its competition as test championships. After it has comfirmed its viability and seen to its stability, it then goes on to name list them as full fledged tournaments, or Cups.

In the case of the Female Under-20 competition, FIFA started it as a female Under-19 called the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championships. Two editions of it were held in Canada (2002) and Thailand (2004).

After these two earlier and opening editions, the tournament was upgraded to the level of a world cup for that category, thus making its third edition to be re-named by the world governing body of the sport as the Under-20 Female World Cup. The 2006 edition held in Russia, was therefore seen as the maiden edition of the new tournament. That edition was won by North Korea, who arrives in Chile, therefore, as defending champions.

Some 335 players from the 16 participating countries, are registered for the tournament.
