Kampala — THE management of Nakivubo stadium has apologised for engaging in power theft, an official from Umeme said.
Mahmood Ssewagudde, the power company's revenue protection officer, said the stadium was among those found stealing power in Kampala last week.
At least 25 people were arrested during the crackdown. Of these, 14 were released on Police bond, four paid up on the spot and seven are still in jail.
"Nakivubo issued 10 post-dated cheques each worth sh1m and promised in writing to pay a further sh5.7m by the end of next January," he said.
On October 28, Nakivubo staff blocked Umeme officials from disconnecting the stadium over an estimated bill of over sh100m.
The two parties negotiated, according to Ssewagudde, and the stadium agreed to pay the current bill of sh2m and about sh20m for the period they dodged payment.
UMEME loses about sh24b in power theft annually, with Rubaga division alone responsible for over 20% of the losses.
