Umuahia — Erosion remains a menace threatening the Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) and would require over N290 million to find a lasting solution to it. The Vice-chancellor, Prof Mkpa A. Mkpa, who made this known in his address at the 19th convocation ceremony of the university, expressed worry that if urgent action was not taken, the university might lose its major infrastructural facilities.

He said the university had over the years grappled with the numerous gully erosion sites, but remained undaunted as it has continued to record many successes in its pursuit of excellence in education, having been adjudged the best managed state-owned university in the West African sub region by the West African Students Union (WASU) based in Accra, Ghana.

The Visitor, Governor Theodore Orji, expressed surprise at the level of infrastructural development recorded by the present ABSU administration despite scarce rsources.

He therefore announced a N10 million increment in the monthly subvention to the institution and endorsed the adoption of multiple choice examination system, which the institution was now using in its semester examinations.

The 19th convocation ceremony featured the award of 4, 630 various classes of certificates, including 25 doctorate degrees, 72 masters, 25 post graduate diplomas and 4, 508 first degrees.

Nigeria's first lady, Hajiya Turai Musa Yar'Adua, who was represented by the wife of Ebonyi state governor, Mrs. Josephine Elechi was the sole recipient of the honorary Doctor of Public Administration (honoris causa)

Two multi-million naira buildings, the Faculty of Business Administration complex named after the President's wife and the Faculty of Law complex, were inaugurated during the ceremony.
