South Africa: Law Student's Assault Put on Hold

The court case of a final-year University of Stellenbosch law student alleged to have attacked two young men has been postponed for further investigation.

David Cloete, 23, faces charges of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.

He appeared briefly in the Stellenbosch Magistrate's Court on Monday, but the matter was postponed to December to allow more time for police to investigate.

The student is alleged to have attacked his housemate Tertius Lambrechts, 21, and student Reinhardt van Dyk, 20, with a knife and dumbbell.

Lambrechts was treated for stab wounds and blows to the head following the attack, and was released from hospital after treatment.

Van Dyk was reported to be in a serious condition at the Stellenbosch Medi-Clinic.

It is alleged that Lambrechts confronted Cloete on Thursday night about an incident the previous night, when he allegedly attacked another student. Van Dyk had been visiting.

The matter was postponed to December 5.
